During June 1991 John Simpson and Mientjie Van Niekerk started the firm Simpson-Van Niekerk. During 1998 Mientjie Van Niekerk resigned from the practice.

The firm recognised the need to grow organically as well as by way of acquisition. To this end, Freddie Masenamela joined the firm as an equity partner and the firm changed it's name to Simpson-Masenamela.
